Vectips Hiatus

After four years of creating tutorials, tips, and hunting for vector art inspiration for Vectips, I’m taking a break and putting Vectips on a hiatus. I didn’t come to this decision easily and below I outline some of the reasons that I made this decision. I also talk about the future of Vectips and other possibilities. I really have enjoyed creating and maintaining Vectips. My career path is changing but I hope Vectips will still have a bright future!

Why The Hiatus?

Let me start out by saying Vectips has been a really wonderful experience. Without Vectips, I would have never been introduced to so many awesome people and amazing career building opportunities. When I first started Vectips, I wanted to give back to the community that has helped me so much. I really hope that I have helped people and have been an inspiration for some.

Maintaining Vectips is a big job. It takes a lot of time each day to create tutorials, write tips and tricks, find vector art inspiration, chat with vector artist, moderate comments, respond to email, and in general maintain the brand.

In addition to Vectips, I am the owner, designer and illustrator of my own design studio Rype Arts. I also run the online Illustrator resource shop Vector Mill. As these properties grow, so does the time it takes to maintain them. The work I am creating for Rype Arts and Vector Mill is very fulfilling creatively and financially. I now want to focus my time on this more creative work. It’s not that I don’t love you guys, my career path had just changed and evolved.

Future of Vectips

So with the hiatus there will be no more updating the site with content. However, I really want the content to still be accessible. So at the very least, Vectips will still stay online. I will probably be throwing more ads on the site to pay for the hosting required to keep it online.

I’m also keeping the option open of selling the site and brand to an interested person or company. It’s my hope to pass on the brand to someone or a group of people with the same passion for Vectips that I have. If you or someone you know is interested, shoot me an email.

The one aspect of Vectips that is really incorporated into my everyday tasks is finding awesome vector art. I am playing around with the idea of creating a way more stripped back blog strictly for the all the awesome vector art I encounter. Just a little something that I would be doing anyway. Let me know what you guys think about this idea.

I’d really like to stay involved in the community moving forward. I’m not sure what that will look like, be it writing guest posts for other Vector blogs or books or, who knows? But I look forward to figuring that out.

Where To Now?

I’m sure Vectips isn’t the only Illustrator blog you read but if it is, there are some killer blogs and tutorial writers out there right now. Here is a quick list of resources that are continuously cranking out great content.

There is so much more and I know I’m missing a bunch so comment with your favs.

Thanks!

Again, I really appreciate all the support from everyone! I hope Vectips can live on in some form or another and I hope to stay very connected to the community. Below is an quick list of places to keep in touch.

  1. This is a real shame, but I understand the reasons, and fully support you. This was such a great website for inspiration. Thank you for 4 years of greatness.

  2. Even though you may be on hiatus, the corpus (nice word, huh?) of work you have provided here is of great benefit to me in advancing my AI skillset and knowledge.

The manner in which your tutorials are presented is simply perfect.

Vectips is certainly a collection of work you should be proud of, and one I will rely on for some time.

    First beer’s on me.

  3. I’m sad..this website is one of my favorite. And I’m just asking you for a new tutorial for envelope distortion.

I wish you all the best Ryan, and have enjoyed everything you’ve done here. <3

  11. Hi Ryan, although I’ll be sad to see Vectips go, I totally understand. It’s a lot of work to maintain a quality community site!

I’ve got a really simple idea for how you still might be able to share your vector art inspiration, but with a minimum of effort! How about creating a board on Pinterest for it?! It really is unbelievably simple to maintain Pinterest boards, and because of them being so visual, they’re perfect for sharing art and design inspiration. If you like you can take a look at the boards I’ve created for my visual inspiration on Pinterest, here’s the link: http://pinterest.com/kateengland/

  25. Thanks a lot Vectips. It’s been an honour. All I can say is all the best may all the good thing follow your journey.

  26. Wow. I have been following your postings since inspiration #34. What an amazing site for an artist. The tutorials, interviews, and especially the inspiration posts have been just fantastic. You had a big impact on the way I think about art and opened my eyes to so many different artists. You can imagine how thrilled I was to be included in the 100th inspiration post a year and a half ago. I really, really hope that you can create a blog for us to follow, as you mentioned in your note. Thank you very much!

  27. First, thank you for all the tips, tricks, tuts and inspiration all these years. second sad news, but the best of lucks to you, and finally can vectips still be the site where you post aweseome vector art thtat you found, just into another category?
    best wishes

  28. Hey Ryan,

I just want to thank you for your great work. I love Vectips.
Especially the ‘weekly inspiration’ posts. It will be great if you continue that feature.
Good luck with your other projects!

    Best,
    Martin

  29. One last thought, did you consider doing a farewell weekly roundup? That would be a cool way to memorialize the site. Maybe you could crowd source the submissions to make it easy on yourself.

  30. I’m glad to hear you’ve got some good things in the pipeline–to that end, I’m not sad to hear you are closing up shop here. Rather, happy that you are moving onward and upward. I too have enjoyed your posts. You’ve definitely given back to the vector community and should feel really proud of your contribution. Good luck in all that you do! I’m sure we’ll be hearing more about you in other ways.

  31. It’s a not good thing to know but I understand you. I’m still a big fan of this space.

    Good luck!

  37. All good things… Thank you for all the amazing content and dedication! hope your future endeavors!
    Live long and prosper!

  38. Pretty sad news. Friday has been vectips-inspiration day for me. It wasn’t unusual for me to spend all weekend training a technique tthat i stumbled across in the more than great weekly vector inspiration works. I’ll miss that. Not because there are no other vector sites out there, that aren’t great to. But because of the great taste and love that you incorporated in these weekly exhibitions. Glad to hear, that you play with the thought of continuing posting inspirations. However: best of luck for all your new and ongoing projects and your personal life!

  39. Mr. Ryan and Vectips… Thanks for all your knowledge and passion shared on this site, for every moment of illustration, tips, tricks and inspiration, thanks you again.
Am going to miss your updates.

    Good luck!

  40. I am deeply saddened by this news… I looked forward to fridays and the weekly inspirations aside from all the great tips. I was telling myself these past two fridays… “WHAT THE $^#@&@ is going on with VECTIPS!” I loved the layout and posts on your site… Please keep it alive some how… you have no idea how much insight and progression to vector art you have brought me… I NEED IT.. its like a drug… please! lol… I understand your career change/progress and wish you the best…

  41. Ryan,

I share the sentiments of everyone above. This site was a weekly stop for me on Fridays to view and appreciate the inspiration you posted. Your updates to Vectips will be missed, but wish you the best of luck in the future with your personal career.

Thanks again for the ride! it was awesome.

  42. This is really bad news, but again thanks for all the tips, tutorials, and inspiration it was a good journey following you this far, so from Colombia i wish you the best! good luck! 🙂

  43. Thanks a lot for all your tips & tutorials.
You’re one of my first mentors and Vectips is definitely one of the reasons that encouraged me to create my own blog dedicated to Illustrator.
Now that you’re moving on, the fact that VforVectors is in your recommendations list means a lot to me.
I wish you the best. Take care.

  44. While it sucks that the first site I check out every morning everyday is going on Hiatus, I just wanted to say thanks for everything. Your website has helped me learn and love Illustrator so much along with gathering inspirational work from around the web. Good luck on your future and I hope someone else can continue this great site.

  45. Thank you for the great site and features you have done over the years on some of my work. I will miss popping in here and getting my fix of solid vector inspiration and nifty tricks. Thanks so much for keeping this going as long as you did and best of luck with your future plans.

    Keep rocking,
    Kronk

  46. My inner vector child is yelling “NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!”

I can never thank you enough.

Vectips was the first to ever include my work on a Weekly Inspiration (#140), and it came at a time where I was laid off from my job, and looking for some encouragement to start “a New Chapter” in my life.

    Vectips helped reinforce my confidence.

I will never forget the moments, the shared work and obviously all the brilliant and insightful tips we’ve come to appreciate from Vectips.

You’ve helped elevate and share our creative endeavors with the world.

Cheers and good luck in all that you do.

  47. I think the positive comments above really show how much we appreciate your work, I found my passion for drawing and designing again in Illustrator from randomly stumbling across this site.
That in turn lead me to the path of Game Design and creating my own company for iOS Applications, which we have now successfully released our first game and our first update for it.

The inspiring artwork and constant flow of seriously handy tips have honestly helped me go from not knowing a thing about Illustrator, to now being a fairly confident designer in just 2 years.

Thank you sincerely, I look foward to seeing your new creative projects through your design studio.

    Cheers, Dan

  48. Just another thank you! I’ve never posted on your site before, but I had to say thanks for all the tips and inspiration. So….thanks!!

  49. I’m sad to know you are stepping back from Vectips, but I totally understand and I wish you all the best 🙂
I want to thank you for all the content you have put together, it helped me and inspired me a lot.
And if it wasn’t for you I probably wouldn’t have my most precious book, the Adobe Illustrator CS4 WOW Book , which I won from Vectips. Thank you so much for that.
I just hope that, If this goes into new hands, that they have the same passion has you do.

Take care and good luck 😉

  50. I am and was a big fan of your site and thank you very much for what you put up. I understand the load because I have my studio and my blog both and feel the pressure. I wish you success in what ever you do
    Good luck

  51. I would just like to say thanks for all your tutorials and weekly updates of vector inspiration. This website has inspired me to evolve and try out new styles of vectoring. Best of luck for the future Ryan, Vectips will be missed.

  52. Wow!.. thats really sad!
I love these site. I came every friday looking for inspiration, or for the simply reason to enjoy for been a illustrator.

I wish you the best! You make my fridays for so many time.

AND THANKS!!!!!!!!!! for all these wonderful time!

  53. Sad to see this incredibly valuable resource come to a halt. The inspiring images you posted opened up my eyes to a whole new world of art as I went through my undergraduate, and cast a light upon some amazing talent that I otherwise would have remained oblivious to. Your tutorials were also fantastic, consistently thorough guides that eventually led to me becoming a bit more savvy about the underlying features of Illustrator. Wherever you end up, please know what an impact this site has had and that, even with no new content, it will be a place that I will recommend highly to colleagues as a wonderful visual resource.

  54. The end of an era! I’ve been coming here every Friday for a good couple of years now so it’s sad to see you go but I’m glad that your career is moving forward. Thanks for all the posts and inspiration!

  55. It’s a real shame to hear this news, but I can see your point. You thank us throughout the post, but we should thank you for all the awesome stuff you have on this site, all the tutorials you make and such.

Sad to see you go, but good luck in your future projects!

    William
